Chris Christenson Surfboards

Chris Christenson the shaper behind Pukas Pegaso

Chris Christenson is the founding shaper of Christenson Surfboards . He was born on May 14, 1973 in Whittier, United States. With over 20 years of experience, talking about Christenson surfboards is synonymous with quality. Today we want to talk about this shaper considered by many as another one of the great gurus in surfboard design.

Chris Christenson Surfboards

In an industry where mass production abounds, it is difficult to find shapers who design, shape, and glass their boards by hand. That is precisely what Christenson does with each of his creations. Often compared to California shaper Ryan Lovelace , his surfboards are authentic works of art. Chris has no rival when it comes to designing surfboards for big waves and retro boards . His extensive experience as a surfer and shaper has allowed him to bring a wide range of surfboards to life in his workshop. From retro models, mini simmons, to 7.0 and 6.0 boards… even guns for big waves. There is no concept of a board that he can’t handle. .

CXCX Surfboards

It is precisely in retro boards and guns where he has built his greatest reputation as a shaper. Currently, Chris is one of the most well-known shapers internationally . In our country, he is known for being part of the Pukas team. Every time he comes to Europe, he stops by the Pukas workshop in Zarautz. And it is precisely in collaboration with Pukas where we find one of his most internationally renowned fish board models: the Pukas Pegaso by Chris Christenson . The Pukas Pegaso is a modern and versatile performance twin fin perfect for surfers looking for a more vertical approach.

Christenson’s best surfboards

Flat tracker, twin tracker, Christenson C- Bucket, Nautilus, Hole Shot, Long Phish, or the Christenson Fish are some of the most popular models. You can find all these boards at SINGLE QUIVER, Christenson’s official store in Europe.

FLAT TRACKER 2.0

We start with this board, the new version of the classic original medium-length design, the Flat Tracker, which was the brand’s best-selling model for a long time. The most important new features of the Flat Tracker 2.0 are found in its tail, which has a reduced area thumbtail and a significant forward V at the end.

These changes have made the board much easier to roll in and out of turns, while also allowing for better speed control and surfing the pocket with much more precision.

Technical specifications:

  • Available from 6’6» to 8’6».
  • Volume from 38.2L to 58.5 liters.
  • Full length / concave bottom shape.

LANE SPLITTER

Another great option from Christenson Boards is the Lane Splitter , a twin fin designed to generate speed and flow down the line, ideal for intermediate level surfers. twinfin diseñado para generar velocidad y el flujo en la línea, ideal para surfistas de nivel intermedio.

Chris created a narrower tail for more control and predictability. The Lane Splitter has CC’s signature rail template to maximize performance, speed, and tolerance in a smaller package. It is also available in a 2+1 configuration.

  • Available from 5’4» to 6’0».
  • Volume from 25.90 liters to 35.10 liters.
  • Recommended FCS 2 Christenson Twin PG Black fins.

TWIN TRACKER CHRIS CHRISTENSON

The Twin Tracker is a board that surprises with its excellent performance and versatility. The Twin allows for very good speed development, and its refined rail allows for much more control and drive.

Additionally, the Twin Tracker combines the adjustability and glide of the Flat Tracker , with greater speed and maneuverability when switching the fin configuration to twins. Compared to the Flat Tracker, the Twin Trackers is narrower and has a tail rocker without contact.

  • Available from 6’6» to 8’6».
  • Volume from 38.2L to 58.4 Liters.

CHRIS CHRISTENSON C-BUCKET

The C-Bucket is a single fin mid-length with a pintail tail. Its shaper Chris Christenson has stated that the C Bucket is the best mid-length he has designed in recent years. This board allows us to surf in different conditions, from the softest to the hollower and faster waves. The shape of the board is quite aerodynamic. And due to its low rails, low rocker, and a complex bottom shape, it adapts to a wide variety of situations and surfing levels, so it can be used by beginners who need to gradually refine their style to the most expert.

CXCX NAUTILUS

Christenson Nautilus is a longer and slimmer version of the classic fish, designed to feel very comfortable in average to epic waves. Chris defines the design of the Nautilus as ‘that missing link between alternative and shorter performance designs’.

This board is a timeless blend of performance, functionality, and aesthetics . Its classic low rails and complex bottom contours allow this design to synchronize with any type of waves. The Nautilus can be ridden in small waves like a normal fish up to larger waves.

The board maintains a thickness of 2.75 inches in almost all lengths, so the larger ones do not become too bulky.

HOLE SHOT CHRIS CHRISTENSON

The Hole Shot is designed for experienced surfers who are able to surf waves between 0.5 m and 2 meters . Its redesigned shape allows for generating speed much more easily. This shortboard has an outline with parallel rails to maximize volume in a small board. The idea is to have maneuverability in soft waves.

The shaper refined the nose and tail of the board, so there is a rail with enough responsiveness to adopt a high-performance approach. Speed is generated thanks to the concaves that start at the nose with a V crossing to double at the front foot becoming more intense before finishing in a V in the tail.

  • With a fairly flat rocker that enhances performance in weak waves.
  • With more volume in the center, which increases buoyancy.
  • The squash tail offers the best of a round tail and the reactivity of a square tail.

LONG PHISH CHRIS CHRISTENSON

Finally, we have the Long Phish   a board built for big open-face turns. Chris designed this board to be ridden longer than your standard board to make you draw lines that you couldn’t do on your regular boards.

  • Long rails, parallel outline for drive and speed.
  • Wider and pointy nose with low entry rocker.
  • Single concave bottom.
  • Twin fin setup.

Available measurements for Long Phish:

  • 6’6» x 21 1/4» x 2 1/2» x 39.1L
  • 6’7» x 21 3/8» x 2 9/16» x 40.8L
  • 6’8» x 21 1/2» x 2 5/8» x 42.6L
  • 6’9» x 21 9/16» x 2 11/16» x 44.3L
  • 6’10» x 21 5/8» x 2 3/4» 46.0L

Christenson’s beginnings as a shaper

Chris grew up in Long Beach, California. His introduction to the world of shaping began thanks to a Hawaiian neighbor who was making surfboards in his garage. Each board he built was like a small operation, a labor of love that Chris became captivated by. He would sit there on his little bike and spend hours watching those foam blanks transform into boards.

When he was in high school, Chris borrowed tools from his neighbor and that’s how he started building his own boards. He used to enter local surf contests and compete with his own boards. Soon his friends started using them. And then friends of those friends. By his second year of college, Christenson already had a thriving business. Today, 25 years later, Chris can boast that over 26,000 surfboards have passed through his workshop.

Video interview with the shaper

We leave you with the interview that the Red Bull guys did with the American shaper during his last visit. It’s interesting to discover that the most valuable object to him is an old brick.
